"An astonishingly good book. . . . A triumph, a classic American biography." (Robert W. Creamer The Washington Post Book World)"Forges a near-perfect synthesis of fine writing and fascinating material. May be the best sports biography ever published." (Ron Fimrite Sports Illustrated)"A superb book, one of the best on football that we have." (Michael Oriard The Philadelphia Inquirer)"A monumental biography." (Michael Bauman Milwaukee Journal Sentinel)"A masterly biography. . . . A finely crafted, multifaceted portrait of a life driven by obsession." (Tim Long The Miami Herald)"Both the reach of the research and the grasp of Lombardi's character are impressive. It is a wonderful work." (Lester Munson Chicago Tribune)"It is simply a superb biography." (Bill Brashler Chicago Sun-Times) David Maraniss is an associate editor at The Washington Post and a distinguished visiting professor at Vanderbilt University. He has won two Pulitzer Prizes for journalism and was a finalist three other times. Among his bestselling books are biographies of Bill Clinton, Barack Obama, Roberto Clemente, and Vince Lombardi, and a trilogy about the 1960s – Rome 1960; Once in a Great City (winner of the RFK Book Prize); and They Marched into Sunlight (winner of the J. Anthony Lucas Prize and Pulitzer Finalist in History). A Good American Family is his twelfth book.

In this groundbreaking biography, David Maraniss captures all of football great Vince Lombardi: the myth, the man, his game, and his God.

More than any other sports figure, Vince Lombardi transformed football into a metaphor of the American experience. The son of an Italian immigrant butcher, Lombardi toiled for twenty frustrating years as a high school coach and then as an assistant at Fordham, West Point, and the New York Giants before his big break came at age forty-six with the chance to coach a struggling team in snowbound Wisconsin. His leadership of the Green Bay Packers to five world championships in nine seasons is the most storied period in NFL history. Lombardi became a living legend, a symbol to many of leadership, discipline, perseverance, and teamwork, and to others of an obsession with winning. In When Pride Still Mattered, Pulitzer Prize-winning author David Maraniss captures the myth and the man, football, God, and country in a thrilling biography destined to become an American classic.

A must for any pro football fan Probably one of the best sports biographies ever written. It helps if you're (1) a Packers fans (2) old enough to have lived during that golden era of winning football and you realized that Lombardi coached teams to attack an opponent's strength, not its weaknesses, to achieve victory. That's why the Patriots are among also-rans when it comes to the discussion of winning football.A Great Read and a Great Coach! I'm half way through the book. I've always been a Packer fan and have admired the man, the coach, the values he held, the extraordinary ability to inspire, the lessons he learned through life through those coaches with whom he worked and how he imparted these lessons to others. Of particular interest to me is how he could be so tough with his players, being demanding but still recognizing the importance of bringing out the best in eacn player and having the results speak for themselves. Many years ago, he was the guest speaker when Henry Jordan was named the "Man of the Year" for the Peninsula Sports Club in Newport News, VA. I had the wonderful experience of being there for that occasion. Whereas Jordan used to say that his coach treats "us all just alike- like dogs", this apparently was not true in that Coach Lombardi was a master in using his psychological gifts in handling all of his players and the results speak to that. His own players have been of a single accord through the years in their praise of the man and how he guided and influenced them all. It is doubtful that anyone will ever be able to surpass him as a coach and as a human being in the eyes of his fans and former players.Loved this book! One of the five or so books with the most character in my library. I loved the background of Coach Lombardi's life. I did not know his involvement in the US Military Academy football coaching staff or the history of college football, pro football and televised football centering around New York. The history of Green Bay was also interesting and why he took the job there. The book itself is beautifully printed and a joy to read.
