If you are interested in streamer fishing, you need to read this book. It seems like in more recent years streamer fishing has become this edgy side to fly fishing. You think of flat brimmed hats quasi skater looking dudes who are using flies the names of which you would never repeat around your wife or mother. This is probably fueled by the exciting promise of potential returns of large fish and an adrenalin rush. The first streamer book of substance I came across was written by Joseph D. Bates, Streamers & Bucktails The Big Fish Flies with original copyright 1950 and most recent 1979. Over the years I came across articles in magazines and shared tips from other fisherman but never really found a one stop reference guide. The next real text of substance which started to unravel the mystery a little more was written by Kelley Gallup, Modern Streamers for Trophy Trout, 2004, which I think reignited the streamer enthusiasm and introduced some truly original concepts and an out the door system. George has done a great job compiling some of the best modern streamers into his pattern section of this book and is a great go to reference.
If you are looking for an across the board streamer book that will help you become a more versatile streamer fisherman this is the right book for you. I really appreciated his breakdown of small, medium and large streamers and explained in detail scenarios in which you could apply what he has learned to your local waters. He does an excellent job as well explaining “tweaks” to leader and sinking line combinations to reach optimal depths for presentation. I like that he explains in great detail upstream, across stream, down and across stream, and downstream presentations and the flies that are more specifically designed for each of those scenarios. Rapp is back and he is as strong as ever in The Survivor, the return of Vince Flynn’s Mitch Rapp series. Of course for fans of Rapp and Flynn, The Survivor is more than just your typical novel. With the tragic passing of Vince Flynn in 2013 many were left to wonder if Flynn’s final novel The Last Man would be the last time we saw Rapp. Thankfully for fans of the counter-terrorism operative, Rapp has returned do to the outstanding work of novelist Kyle Mills. Up front I have to say that I am a huge Flynn fan. I started reading Flynn in the summer of 2000 and found him to be one of the best novelists of the past two decades. To me he helped define what a thriller should be in the post 9-11 world. As a result while I was thrilled to hear Rapp would return, I was also very wary if anyone could produce a Rapp novel anywhere near the quality of what Flynn wrote. Well I’m thrilled to say Kyle Mills has delivered a Rapp novel that exceeded everyone of my expectations. To me The Survivor is a top 5 Rapp novel. Mills did something I didn’t think was possible, he made me forget that The Survivor wasn’t written by Vince Flynn.
The tone, style, pace and voice of the novel is Flynn. I’m not sure how Kyle Mills pulled this off but I can’t compliment him enough for this. The task of carrying on for Flynn must have been beyond stressful. The fact that he produces such a home run of a novel in his first attempt with Rapp makes me beyond thrilled to see what happens in the next novel.
The Survivor checks off all the must haves of a Mitch Rapp novel. The pace and thrills are non-stop. The action as always is top shelf and among the strongest in the genre. In particular I have to give Mills an amazing amount of credit for what I believe to be one of the best action set pieces in Rapp history.
CIA counterterrorist agent Mitch Rapp – the hero of more than a dozen political thrillers and one of the most popular fictional characters of our time – returns in The Survivor, the first novel in the series to be published after the untimely demise of its original creator. When author Vincent “Vince” Flynn died in 2013, after losing a three-year battle against prostate cancer, there was every possibility of the popular Flynn’s terrorist-smashing character getting buried alongside its creator, as his last work The Survivor was only a few chapters completed. Fortunately, the mantle has passed on to thriller writer Kyle Mills who has to his credit thirteen books, including three in the style of Jason Bourne creator Robert Ludlum.
Yet I was apprehensive that Kyle Mills will stray away from the main concept and characterization of the series. I had nagging thoughts in mind that the Mitch Rapp of Vince Flynn will be completely unrecognizable in the Mitch Rapp of Kyle Mills. However, in continuing the series, Kyle Mills has stay true to Vince Flynn’s Mitch Rapp, and I was unable to distinguish the difference in the narrative and plot between the styles of Vince Flynn and Kyle Mills. I rest assured in the knowledge that the series is in safe hands, and if The Survivor is any indication, fans of Mitch Rapp can expect many more explosive terrorist-smashing adventures in the years to come.
As for The Survivor, which is jointly credited to Vince Flynn and Kyle Mills, it is one of the best in the series, if not the best. The settings, pacing, and characterizations are as good as ever, and what deserves special mention is the fact that Kyle Mills didn’t overlook the fact that some situations need resolution in the present instalment, and fittingly brought in some characters from the past.
